Time to Rally

I didn’t know before I purchased an RV that manufacturers, dealers, and clubs host various rallies during any given year in locations across the country. Since our purchase, we’ve received numerous invitations to rallies and have considered attending a few but not knowing what we were getting into we differed until recently.

The first rally we attended was hosted by the manufacturer of our RV. It was an international rally and over four hundred owners attended with their RV’s. The rally was held at the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia, Missouri and it was interesting, entertaining, and fun. The actual organizational work is performed by a club formed to support the owners and sponsored by the manufacturer. The location for the annual rally moves from year to year. There were several reasons I enjoyed the experience. We met others with RVs like ours, we attended informational meetings to learn about our RV, scheduled service and shopped for hard-to-find items. In addition, we were entertained and fed. To top off the experience, the fairgrounds are historic and I loved seeing the old buildings. There was also an exhibition hall where vendors came to display their merchandise and it was there that one vendor was advertising another rally in Louisiana, The Cajun RV Festival.

Cajun RV Festival
For the past several years, the Cajun RV Festival has been hosted by a private group at the Isle of Iberia RV Resort in Iberia, Louisiana. The park is owned and operated by the county and is a very nice facility for hosting the fifty or so RV’s that come to the rally each year. The four-day festival is mostly Cajun food, music, and a lot of fun. The organizers also schedule day trips around the area for those who are interested in signing up but we did our sightseeing and went to many of the same places. One of the coolest things we did do with a festival group was visit a crawfish farm. I had never been to one and considering myself a lifelong learner we figured this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. For about an hour we watched a boatman drive around the crawfish ponds to harvest the traps while we listened to the farm’s owner explain the operation. The boat had a drive wheel at the back and a flat bottom. The wheel had an articulating arm which allowed the boatman to not only steer the boat within the pond but maneuver the boat across the land between one pond and another. The field trip was an interesting addition to our rally experience.

In the future, I may not attend a lot of rallies but I enjoyed the two I’ve been to and will look for more in the future.

Safe travels

  1. 50 years ago I spent the coldest night of my life “RV-ing” in a 1963 Volkswagen 15-window bus. At 5am I had to find warmth somewhere and while having problems using my unfeeling frozen feet on the pedals AND being educated personally that overpasses do indeed freeze before regular road surfaces I was unwittingly instilling prejudice in my thinking. I subsequently used that VW Bus to cross the country and as a domicile until I could find work and a “real” home. It was never recreational. Now, decades later, it has taken reading these posts to finally recognize that my under-preparation on a frozen night tainted my understanding of the possibilities of adventure. I am enjoying these exploits vicariously. Keep on discovering the varieties in this life. Just remember to always have a pair of warm socks.
